Benfica Left-Back Guardiola’s number one target?
Benfica Left-Back Alex Grimaldo is reportedly Guardiola’s number one target this summer.
Grimaldo, 21, is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy. The Spanish under-21 international has much pace to beat opponents and has attacking mindset. Having impressed for Barcelona B side, Grimaldo joined Benfica for a reported €1.5m.
Grimaldo has been linked with City from last summer after Guardiola’s arrival. The talks gathered serious momentum in the winter transfer window but City didn’t lodge any official bid considering Grimaldo suffered an injury back then.
Now, according to Correio da Manha in Portugal, Manchester City are pushing to secure Grimaldo’s services and they have already held talks with Benfica regarding Grimaldo during negotiation for Ederson.
City need to address their left-back position this summer. They have been linked with Benjamin Mendy, Ryan Bertrand and Alex Sandro. Grimaldo, whose contract at the Estadio da Luz runs until 2021, has now been added to the long-list of targets.
Benfica are demanding €35m for Grimaldo which is considerably less than his release clause of €60m. Keeping in mind Guardiola’s other top targets, Grimaldo would come cheap and indications are there City would match Benfica’s valuation to land the Spaniard at the Etihad.
