Schalke have parted ways with head coach Markus Weinzierl after a disappointing season and had replaced him with Domenic Tedesco.

Tedesco took charge of second-tier FC Erzgebirge Aue for the last 11 games – his first job as a boss – and guided them to survival.

Tedesco has signed a two-year deal at Schalke, who finished 10th in the German top-flight. Weinzierl took charge of the Gelsenkirchen only a year ago and the optimism that surrounded with his arrival transformed into a big disappointment as the Royal Blue’s lost their first 5 league games of the campaign.

The German was unable to guide the Royal Blues to a European competition for the first since 2009/10 season, as they finished a modest 10th place in the league. Weinzierl was finally axed when Schalke could not cross the quarterfinal hurdle in Europa League and also in the DFB Cup.

“We’ve scrutinised the whole season, with a view to making the coming season as successful as possible,”

said Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel.

“We came to the conclusion that changes needed to me made in order to make the desired progress. Part of this included changing the position of head coach. I didn’t take the decision lightly, though. My thanks goes to Markus Weinzierl, who I wish all the very best for the future.”

Schalke will hope to bounce back next season and hence they have recruited a young coach, who has helped Bundesliga 2 outfit Erzgebirge Aue to avoid relegation.

“Domenico Tedesco does not have a great deal of experience in professional football, but he convinced us in our talks how he wants to shape the future of Schalke,” Heidel explained. “Like a number of other clubs, we’ve opted for a very young, but also a particularly innovative coach. The entire Schalke board supports the decision.”

Tedesco has graduated coaching school as best in class, ahead of Hoffenheim’s Julian Nagelsmann, in 2016. Schalke will be hoping that the 31-year old can replicate the same things in Bundesliga for them and be ahead of Nagelsmann who has been sensational for Hoffenheim since taking charge.
