Khalid Jamil is the new Head Coach of East Bengal
Aizawl’s I-League winning boss Khalid Jamil is almost confirm to take the helm of Kingfisher East Bengal in the upcoming season. After the prolonged dilemma, the Red and Gold has finally got their new coach.
According to sources, club Secretary Debabrata Sarkar flew to Mumbai to attend the AIFF meeting accompanied by Alvito D’Cunha. At the same trip they scheduled to meet Jamil and struck the deal with him.
It was like a cycle being completed as back in 2001, the same Debabrata Sarkar went to Mumbai to sign Khalid Jamil the player. But he denied to play for a team being sponsored by a Breweries agency. Although this time, the former India international has finally given the nod to the East Bengal officials. Sources claim that the jersey of Khalid may not have the logo of ‘Kingfisher’.
East Bengal were in talks with both Khalid Jamil and Sanjoy Sen. But Sen’s name gained prominence as Jamil wanted time as he waited to see the outcome of the meeting at Kuala Lumpur. After the meeting got over it became clear that I-League will remain the top league at least for this year and both parties re-established the contact which ultimately have resulted into a done deal.
East Bengal have already signed many of the Aizawl players and after Jamil’s arrival they will be able to focus on the team building more from now on. Khalid Jamil won the ‘AIFF Best Coach of I-League’ award last night in the Gala Ceremony in Mumbai.
