Rangers sign Bruno Alves on a two-year deal

Rangers have signed Portuguese defender Bruno Alves on a two-year deal after he left Serie A side Cagliari Calcio at the end of the season.

Alves has enjoyed a glittering career at club level and was a part of the squad that won the 2016 European Championship.

Alves started his career at Porto before going on various loan spells at S.C. Farense, Vitória de Guimarães and AEK Athens before returning to Porto, cementing his place in the first team. He then went on to win a total of nine major honours including four Primeira Liga titles before joining Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2010. There he won two Premier League titles and a Russian Super Cup. Bruno then signed for Turkish side Fenerbahçe helping them win the Süper Lig and the Turkish Super Cup.

Bruno then joined Cagliari during the 2016 summer transfer window and after completing the season left the club.

Speaking to Rangers TV after signing the deal, the 35-year-old said:

“I am very happy to join the club and I will do my best to win.”
“The main reason that I come here, I have this feeling and desire to win and to move here will bring this back to me and my career.”

In an interview on the club’s website, Alves further added:

“This is one of the best feelings that I have in my career and the last time I was a champion at a club was in Fenerbahce. I want to have this feeling again.

“I think I come here for the right reasons and I think that I can bring this back to the club It is going to be an amazing journey, I am sure about that.”

Alves has made a total of 89 appearances for the Portugal national team scoring 11 goals.
