Leeds United have appointed Victor Orta as their new director of football, joining the club from Middlesbrough.

Orta joined Middlesbrough in December, 2015 under previous boss Aitor Karanka and chairman Steve Gibson as head of recruitment. He was responsible for bringing in a host of players including Víctor Valdés, Antonio Barragán, Gastón Ramírez, Adama Traoré, Álvaro Negredo, Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford. All his efforts culminated in a promotion for Middlesbrough to the promising lands of Premier League but after a woeful form, the club second bottom and were relegated subsequently.

Orta is highly thought of in Europe as he was a part of the technical and recruitment staff at Sevilla in 2006 when they won the UEFA Cup. He has also worked with few other clubs including Russian side Zenit St Petersburg where he helped them recruit Brazilian star Hulk and then with Spanish club Elche before being recruited by Middlesbrough.

Speaking about his new role at Leeds, Orta said:

“I am excited by the opportunity to become Director of Football at a great club like Leeds United.”
“Once I had met with Andrea Radrizzani and spoken to him about his plans to take the club forward, I knew that this was the right move for me and I am confident that we can achieve great things in the coming years.”

Chairman and club owner Andrea Radrizzani added:

“I am delighted to welcome Victor to Elland Road, I have been impressed by his knowledge of the game, his extensive scouting network and his desire to help us achieve our objective of getting Leeds United back to the Premier League.”

The appointment of Victor Orta comes four days prior to the appointment of Angus Kinnear as managing director. Kinnear himself joined Leeds just four days after Radrizzani assumed full control of the club by buying out former co-owner Massimo Cellino and Orta’s appointment has paved the way for Aitor Karanka’s appointment as the club’s new manager after Gary Monk resigned unexpectedly last week.
