Luis Enrique will be replaced by former Athletic Bilbao manager, Ernesto Valverde.

Valverde has signed a 2-year deal with Barcelona with an option of 3rd year. Valverde was in charge of Athletic Bilbao for 4 years has left the club this year, and is now ready to make a journey from Bilbao to Barcelona to fill the void left by Luis Enrique.

Luis Enrique had already announced that he would leave the club after this season and took charge of the club for the last time when Barca defeated Alaves 3-1 in the Copa Del Rey final at the Vincente de Calderon.Enrique took final charge will look to win the FA cup. Enrique has an exceptional record at the Camp Nou, under his reign Barca won the treble on the 1st year in charge, they won the domestic double the next year and the Copa del Rey in his last season.

“I have spoken with Ernesto Valverde and I have spoken about our decision”, said the club president Jose Maria Bartomeu.
“Ernesto is very happy and excited as he thinks it’s a great challenge to be the head coach at Barcelona”.

Bartemeu also added that ” There are reasons why we choose him, as we believe in his knowledge, experience and ability and thought him to be the right choice for the club.”
He also said that “he loves youth football and has a special style similar to what we do at Barca. His philosophy is same as the club as both look to develop youth”.

Valverde was a player for Barcelona for 2 years under Johan Cryuff from 1988 to 1990. As a coach he has won the Spanish SuperCopa for Bilbao against Barca in 2015 and 3 time league winner and 2 time cup winner in Greece with Olympiacos. He also led Espanyol to UEFA Cup final in 2007.

Valverde has twice topped the list of managers to be appointed which included Jorge Sampaoli, Ronald Koeman, and also Luis Enrique’s assistant Juan Carlo Unzue.
Valverde will look to mend things at Barca as the people in Blaugrana holds high expectation from the 53-year old former Bilbao manager. Hopefully Valverde is the right person for the job and he can again make Barca a team to beat, as they finished 2nd in LA Liga. Their Champions League campaign was one to forget as they were defeated by Juventus in the quarterfinals, so they definitely look for a turn of fortune under Valverde.

The only silverware that Barca won was the Copa del Rey as an underwhelming season came to an end.

The Cules will definitely hope that the new recruit really stands out for the job and guides the club back to glory.
