Coupe de France final Angers SCO vs Paris Saint-Germain F.C

0 20

Paris Saint-Germain and Angers SCO are the last man standing in this year’s Coupe de France, and the pair will now do battle at Stade de France this Saturday in a bid to hold the trophy aloft.

Today, the last piece of silverware in the French season will be handed at Stade de France when the Coupe de France Finale is contested by Paris Saint-Germain and Angers SCO.

Angers SCO – who have never won a major trophy – finished 12th in the 20-team Ligue 1 and will qualify for the Europa League should they cause an upset in their first French Cup final for 60 years.

They will head into this final, their first since 1957, in jubilant mood. But it’s going to take an extraordinary effort from Stephane Moulin’s team to pull off the victory.

Meanwhile, PSG would like to make amendments for their shocking defeats in the Champions League and the Ligue 1. Unai Emery’s side failed to maintain a first-leg 4-0 lead in the Champions League and bowed in front of a rampant AS Monaco side in Ligue 1. A win on Saturday will ensure the Parisians of a “domestic double” – different than the one they are usually accustomed to – as they have already bagged the Coupe de la Ligue and a win would send everyone off for the summer in a positive mood.

Even if they manage to lift the Coupe de France on Saturday, there’s no denying the fact that this season has been one of the most disappointing season for the Parisians in recent years.

As mentioned above, PSG have the opportunity to clinch a domestic double today but they have fallen amazingly short in big competitions. Surely the PSG management didn’t rope in Unai Emery to bag this cups. PSG finished 2nd in Ligue 1, seven points behind eventual winners AS Monaco. Unai Emery also saw his European journey end in a dramatic fashion when Sergi Roberto striked in last minute to oust PSG from the UCL.

The Paris club should be too strong, though. While Monaco did win the Ligue 1 title, PSG have won 13 of their last 16 league games; they’re still a side in strong form. Questions were being raised on PSG’s attacking status after Ibrahimovic decided to leave the French Giants for Manchester United and PSG put forward an answer which had failed to impress the critics in recent times i.e. Edinson Cavani.

Edinson Cavani was given more responsibility this term after the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and he has managed to fill his shoe’s with aplomb. He finally got a run as the team’s centre-forward and since then he has led the line with purpose, intensity and aggression. Only Lionel Messi ( 37 Goals ) has scored more goals than Edinson Cavani ( 35 Goals ) in the top 5 European Leagues this season.

With so much quality and experience in their squad, PSG will be expected to win this one comfortably. But Angers have showcased some fantastic spirit on their way to the final, no more so than in their semi-final victory over Guingamp.

They will play their first final since 1957 and we can expect them to go out and give stiff competition to PSG.

Angers – who have never won a major trophy – were only promoted to the top-flight in 2015 and since then have played PSG four times in the league, losing three times and drawing once.
