Copa del Rey Finale: FC Barcelona vs Deportivo Alaves

FC Barcelona and Deportivo Alavés are the last man standing in this season’s Copa del Rey, and now the pair will do battle at Vicente Calderon this Saturday in a bid to hold the trophy aloft.

Tomorrow, the last piece of silverware in the Spanish season will be handed at Vicente Calderon when the Copa del Rey final is contested by FC Barcelona and Deportivo Alavés.

Barça are looking forward to give a flamboyant farewell to their coach Luis Enrique. For the time being, this will be the final match of Barcelona under Luis Enrique era. The 47 year old bagged the ‘treble’ in his first season as Barça coach. Barcelona failed to defend their Champions League title next season but managed to successfully defend their “domestic double” under Luis Enrique. He has enjoyed much success in his first two campaigns at the helm but is now relying on this weekend’s showpiece to salvage his final term, having failed in both the Champions League and La Liga.

Barcelona have endured a disappointing season in 2016-17. They lost out to Real Madrid in the La Liga title race and were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by Juventus in the quarter-finals.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side will step on Vicente’s turf as major underdogs on Saturday. However, Alaves are a well-drilled side and have caused their fair share of upsets in 2016-17. They are one of the few sides who have beaten Barça at their home this season. They have also managed to down Villarreal in both the legs this season. They have taken points from Sevilla in the league and have managed to overcome Celta Vigo to reach the final.

The beaten 2001 UEFA Cup finalists have had far less luck at the other end of the field, however, scoring at a rate of just over a goal-per-game on average, so Barca’s potentially makeshift defence should have a quieter evening than they have become accustomed to in recent weeks.

The Catalan giants are heavy favourites to beat the side that finished 9th in La Liga 2016-17, but the Basque side can take heart from the fact that they beat Barca 2-1 at the Camp Nou in September. This means that they have the required experience of bettering their auspicious final opponents.
