The Bianconeri stumble in Rome and are forced to wait for the Scudetto
Roma hold Juventus at home, as the Giallorossi came from behind to win 3-1
Juventus will have to wait another week to claim a historic sixth successive Serie A title after Roma ran out 3-1 winners at the country capital.
Juventus needed just a point to secure the title with two matches to spare and took the lead on 21 minutes through Mario Lemina. But goals from De Rossi, El Shaarawy, and Nianggolan made sure that the Bianconeri return home empty handed.
Roma started with a lot of presence and plenty of attacking intent right from the beginning but they could have been trailing as early as 7 minutes from the start.
Juventus had a corner, Pjanic stepped up to take the set-piece against his former team. His corner was not properly cleared as it reached Asamoah, the Ghana International’s shot from 20yards away struck the post.
Juventus just kept coming at Roma and they took the lead when Higuain excellently squares Sturaro’s ball over the top for Lemina to open the scoring.
Roma was quick to respond as they equalised within 4 minutes. Buffon did everything he could to keep out Manolas’ header and also kept out De Rossi on the follow-up but the Roma captain did not make the same mistake for the 2nd time as he was quick to react and fired into the roof of the net.
Both the teams had plenty of chances to add to the scoresheet, but the goalkeepers were up to their task as Szczesny denied a powerful shot from Higuain. Whereas Salah did not make the most of his free header which was very comfortably held by Buffon.
Juve was in control of the match but Roma had other ideas as the Giallorossi took the lead with only 11 minutes into the 2nd half. A quick free-kick was taken by Roma as Nianggolan finds El Shaarawy in space on the left flank as the Italian shot took a wicked deflection off Bonucci sending it past helpless Buffon.
Allegri changed a few tactics and he sent Dani Alves on for Lichtsteiner to increase Juve’s attacking threat. But the Brazilian was guilty of playing Nianggolan onside and the Belgian midfielder fired a powerful strike to beat Buffon at his near post.
In came Dybala for Sturaro, as Allegri look to savor something from the fixture. Both Dybala and Bonucci squandered chances as they were disappointing in front of goal. The missed opportunities perfectly summed up Juve’s night at the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma celebrated their victory, even more, when Totti came in the 93rd minute for Salah. Totti is believed to be retiring at the end of the season and was overjoyed by the victory.
Higuain had a chance to reduce the deficit but was brilliantly kept out by Szczesny’s legs. Juventus suffered a 3-1 defeat to Roma and will now look to clinch their 6th successive Serie A title against relegated Crotone at home.
