Feyenoord claimed their first Dutch Eredivisie title in 18 years after a hat trick from 36-year-old Dirk Kuyt on the final day of the season.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were top of the table right from the start of the season. Feyenoord managed to seal the title with a great win over Heracles as Ajax finished in the 2nd place just one point behind them.

Feyenoord had the chance to win the title last week but they lost to Excelsior and that result left the title race wide open. Ajax defeated Willem II and was hoping for Feyenoord to slip again in their final fixture.

But Feyenoord matched their rivals and defeated Heracles in the final matchday courtesy of 3 goals from captain Kuyt managed to finish just before Ajax.

Kuyt opened the scoring within 38 seconds into the game and doubled it with a 12th-minute header to put Feyenoord in a commanding position.

The home side ended the fixture with another from Kuyt this time from the penalty spot to complete his hat-trick. Peter van Ooijen’s consolation goal at the end was not enough to stop the side from Rotterdam.

Feyenoord’s win over Heracles resulted that Ajax’s win over Willem II was totally in vain as the 33time champions have fallen short by just 1 point.

It is Feyenoord’s 15th overall league title and their first title since 1998-99, manager Van Bronckhorst ending the streak in only his second full season, his first having seen the club win the KNVB Cup.

It was a complete team effort from Feyenoord this season ending an 18-year league title drought. The standout performers for them were Nicolai Jorgensen with 21 goals and 11 assists in the league, Jens Toornstra has also chipped in with 14 goals and 9 assists. The likes of Brad Jones, Rick Karsdorp, Eljero Elia and also club captain Dirk Kuyt were also highly influential in the club’s glory this season.

Feyenoord proved invincible at their De Kuip stadium – winning 15 and drawing 2 – yet they endured 4 defeats and 2 more draws on their travels, ending a very successful season for the side from Rotterdam.
