Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Match Preview
It’s official now: The second semifinal of the ongoing Federation Cup will be a Kolkata Derby. The match-up was confirmed after defending champions Mohun Bagan came from behind to draw 1-1 with Bengaluru FC at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
Many rivalries and derbies may come and go but none of the rivalries stands par to par with the “Kolkata Derby”. The charisma of this derby can never ever fade away. It’s not just a match it’s a clash between two ideologies – it’s a clash between two cultures.
Mohun Bagan started their Federation Cup campaign with a bang. They outplayed DSK Shivajians in each and every department of the game in their opening match to thump them by 4-0. A strong performance against Shillong Lajong in their second match – which resulted in a 3-2 victory for the Mariners – ensured them of a place in the semi finals. Sanjoy Sen played it safe in the last match of the Mariners and was happy to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bengaluru FC. However, it remains to be seen if their good form is a temporary revival or a genuine sign of long-term improvement.
East Bengal, on the other hand, made a rather dismal start but they have managed to recover on time to make amendments and send a strong message to the other teams. They drew their opening match against Churchill Brothers by 1-1 and then struggled to find the back of the net in the second game against Chennai City FC but they managed to beat them by 2-0. The Red and Golds left it late as a goalless draw in their final match against Aizwal FC ensured them of a semifinal berth.
This weekend’s derby is one of opportunity for both sides to bag a major silverware in their kitty. Apart from the mental pressure, this tie is expected to be an intensely tactical affair.
Mohun Bagan A.C.
If Mohun Bagan are to win against East Bengal on Sunday and go an to re-claim the Federation Cup title, they will need their dynamic midfield duo of Sony Norde and Katsumi Yusa to be at their best in the remaining five matches. Their playing styles may be as different as chalk and cheese but the Haitian and the Japanese combine well with each other. When they are on song, the Green and Maroon are hard to stop.
Both of them are in fine form and they are likely to be accompanied by Duffy and Balwant Singh on the front. Both the strikers are in deadly form and it will be a real test for East Bengal’s defence to resist them from finding the back of the net.
Plaza’s performance holds the key to the teams fortunes. He has been quite a revelation for EB this season. East Bengal need Plaza’s predatory skills as they look to go for broke in quest for the title. Many things rely on Wedson Anselme too. He had a terrific start with the Reds and Golds but a groin injury rattled his form. East Bengal will count heavily on their Haitian skillsman to give them an early lead in Sunday’s epic face-off with Mohun Bagan.
Mohun Bagan A.C.:
There’s no major injury concerns in MB’s camp. However the players are looking tired and fatigue. Duffy, Balwant and Shehnaj are likely to take their positions on the field for Sunday’s mega encounter after taking a day off against Bengaluru FC on Friday.
Arnab was seen limping in pain when he landed in an awkward position after performing an aerial challenge against Aizwal. He continued to play after this incident but he is likely to be rested on Sunday.
