AS Monaco vs Lille OSC Match Preview
A win for Monaco this weekend and the league title is all but mathematically wrapped up. Victory will leave the principality side three points clear of PSG with a game in hand and the Parisians with only a solitary game left to play.
Monaco’s goal difference though is almost worth an extra point, starting the weekend 18 goals ahead of PSG. The Stade Louis II has been a veritable fortress for Monaco this season with 15 wins and only a solitary loss from 17 matches played there, home form that has seen them lead the league for the majority of the season.
Lille in contrast, have very little to play for this weekend with a bottom half finish just about inevitable. Interim coach Franck Passi will hope his players seek enough motivation to finish the season strongly by the prospect of impressing incoming coach Marcelo Bielsa.
Lille’s away form this season, similarly to their league form in general, has been patchy so far this season with only 6 wins in 18 games. Given the form of the respective teams, Lille’s away form does not give them a lot of reason for optimism going into this game against the team leading the league.
Stopping Monaco’s attacking prowess will be key for Lille this weekend. Monaco’s four lead scorers (Falcao, Mbappé, Lemar, Germain) have scored 51 goals between them this season, with the team in its entirety having scored 98 so far. Whilst Lille are the ninth best defensive team this season, stopping that level of attacking threat will take some doing, and will determine the result this Sunday.
