Mohun Bagan came within touching distance in lifting their second I-League title in three years but it was yet another season of so near yet so far.

The I-League is over and Bagan will look to shift their focus on the Federation Cup – the second most valuable tournament of India. The Mariners have won it for a record 14 times and this term, they are also the defending champions.

Bagan will open their campaign against DSK Shivajians on Monday. Coach Sanjay Sen has refused to take this tie lightly. He hailed DSK Shivajians as an unpredictable side who can turn the tables around on their day.

“It’s important to cross the first hurdle.” Sen said at pre-match conference. “They are the type of team you should never take on granted. Had it been Bengaluru FC or East Bengal, my game plan would have been simpler. But you never know what a team like Shivajians will throw up on a given day”, Sen maintained.

Sony Norde and Katsumi Yusa will lead Bagan’s attack from the flanks. The onus will be on Anas Edathodika and Eduardo Ferreira to keep things tight at back and keep Shivajians’ strikers Barraso and Holicharan Narzary at bay.

Sen was keen to field Debjit Majumdar under the bar, but the AIFF has clarified that the goalkeeper, who was shown a red card in Bagan’s last I-League game against Chennai City FC, will have to sit this match out. He will be replaced by Shibinraj Kunniyil.

DSK Shivajians, on the other hand, can welcome back Subrata Paul after NADA gave him the nod to play on until his appeal against the doping charge is heard. Shivajians coach, Dave Rogers, remained non-committal over whether he will field Paul or not.
