Dortmund 2-1 Hoffenheim Match Report
Tuchel’s men defeat Hoffenheim at home and march ahead of them for the 3rd spot.
The action-packed fixture resulted in an emphatic victory for Dortmund, as they seize the 3rd spot from Hoffenheim.
Goals from Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped Dortmund beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in a dramatic encounter. This victory will now hand Dortmund a great advantage of finishing 3rd ahead of Hoffenheim to secure a direct spot in the Champions League group stages next season.
These 2 sides have been neck-to-neck this season as they have been jostling for the 3rd spot and secure a spot in the group stages of Champions League next season. This made the match far more interesting and the dramatic encounter for the viewers.
The hosts started the match in an emphatic fashion as Reus handed them a lead just 4 minutes into the match, as he ran behind from the left before sending a finish through Baumann’s legs.
Reus was sent off in the reverse fixture and perhaps escaped, fortunately, to only see a yellow card when he recklessly caught Zuber just inside the touchline.
Hoffenheim were furious with the officials and the fury was even more when referee Felix Brych pointed towards the spot after Reus’ cross from the left struck Kaderabek’s arm. But Unfortunately, Aubameyang missed it completely, sending it horribly wide.
The Gabon international could not capitalise on the golden opportunity to go 2-0 up in the match. But his missed penalty kept the visitors in the game as they look to equalise in a hot-tempered affair. Hoffenheim was looking threatening in the build up but the end product was missing.
Chances came their way when Wagner had a chance of scoring but his shot went straight to Burki. After an exciting beginning, the game was now more measured as it progressed as both sides lacked quality in the final third.
Hoffenheim was on the front right from the beginning of the 2nd half and Demirbay’s shot from distance was saved rather unorthodoxly by Burki. The visitors were pushing forward in search of an equaliser and which created open spaces at the back for Dortmund to exploit.
Reus could have had a 2nd goal but his excellent left-footed volley, required a stunning save from Baumann to deny the Germany international.
With 8 minutes remaining on the clock Dortmund doubled their lead when Piszczek’s cross caused a lot of problems inside the box as Guerreiro’s shot struck the post and was notched home on the rebound.
The visitors did get on the scoresheet late in the game when Ginter dragged down Wagner inside the box. Kramaric was handed the job of converting the penalty and he did it with precision.
But Tuchel’s men were capable enough to see off the final stages and bagged a much needed win to secure the 3rd place.
However, Hoffenheim, this season’s surprise package, could not complete the comeback and now sit two points below Dortmund in the fourth position with two matches remaining. This result means that now they need a favour from other fixtures to regain the 3rd spot. But they were unable to spoil the party at the Signal Iduna Park.
