Atletico Madrid vs SD Eibar Match Preview
Diego Simeone’s men will return to La Liga action tomorrow – hoping to end their losing streak.
Atlético Madrid suffered a bitter blow in midweek, losing 3-0 to Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu in the 1st leg of their UCL semifinal tie.
Atlético Madrid can take heart from the fact that they have only lost twice in their last 20 La Liga matches and thy have an outstanding record of 71% of wins on their home turf in this season.
Atlético Madrid are sitting on the third position in La Liga courtesy of 71 points from 35 games. On the other hand, Eibar are on the 8th position with 54 points from 35 games. Atlético Madrid are out of the title race but they are well poised to make it to Champions League. Eibar are expected to finish within the first half of the table.
Eibar, who have racked up 54 goals this season – an exaggerating number for them – are going to lock horns with Atlético Madrid who have conceded the least number of goals in the La Liga this season. Atlético have conceded only 25 times in the La Liga this season.
Atletico Madrid had a dismal start to this year’s La Liga. Atletico began the season looking rattled after their traumatic defeat in the Champions League final at the hands of their Madrid neighbours. Simeone’s defensive system, usually Atletico’s biggest strength, appeared rusty and soft. Their biggest signing of the summer, French forward Kevin Gameiro, struggled to fit into the physical demands that playing up front for Atletico involves.
Very poor run of results in La Liga in November – one victory, one draw and three defeats in five matches, during which the team scored three goals and conceded eight – set off all the alarms. Although their Champions League campaign was still alive, their poor performance in the domestic competition could have compromised their participation in the biggest European tournament for the following season, with catastrophic financial consequences for the club. In the sixth position at that time, that risk was real.
From that point onwards, and thanks to a few tactical and personnel decisions made by Simeone, the team have recovered their swagger.Atlético’s defence needs to keep an eye on Eibar’s wingers and backs and their set-piece takers as most of Eibar’s goal have been scored from crosses and set-pieces.
There has been a freefall in Eibar’s performance too as they have managed to pick up only 4 points from their last 4 matches, which has ended their dream of a possible European Glory next season. Eibar haven’t scored in three of their past 4 matches and this is a matter of worry for them as they are going to face a side who have an overall clean sheet percentage of 54% in the league.
Atlético De Madrid:
Diego Godin will be back from a ban but Stefan Savic will remain suspended for this one. Vrsaljko and Juanfran are going to miss this match too due to injuries.
Right back Ander Copa is out with a hand injury. Gonzalo Escalante is expected to feature in the midfield.
