Ajax 4-1 Lyon: Match Report
Ajax’s exuberant youth crushes Lyon 4-1 at home and goes one step closer to the Europa League final.
Ajax took a huge step towards the Europa League final with an excellent 4-1 victory over Lyon at the JohanCryuff Arena.Goals from Chelsea loanee Bertrand Traore in each half and also from Kasper Dolberg and Amin Younes did the job for the Dutch side. While Hakim Ziyech was also brilliant on the evening with 3 assists.
Mathieu Valbuena’s goal gave the visitors a glimmer of hope as they will look to turn the tie in Lyon in a week’s time. The French side has a mountain to climb in the 2nd leg.
It was dominant display from Peter Bosz’s youthful side at the Amsterdam Arena. The stadium was sold out as Ajax made their first appearance in European Semifinal since last 20 years.
The visitors had the upper hand at the beginning and could have had the lead in the 11th minute when Tousart’s brilliant cutback found Cornet but his shot was somehow kept out by a stretching leg from Onana.
Ajax failed to respond to the early attack of the visitors but as the game progressed they were looking far more in control.
The hosts had to wait until the 25th minute for the 1st goal when Dolberg was brought down by Morel and Ziyech’s fine delivery need a little touch from Traore to send it past Lopes.
Younes was set for a quick run into the are but Diakhaby intercepted his ball to Dolberg in the six-yard box. Ajax was starting to exert pressure on their opponents.But minutes later the Danish teenager doubled their lead when he latched on to a Traore header to punish a poor clearance from Lopes, as he fires the shot past the goalkeeper at the bottom left corner.
Lopes somehow made up for his previous mistake when he denied a low stinging shot from Younes who was looking to set up the tie for the hosts within half-time.But its was not long that the German U21 went onto the scoresheet. The supplier was again Ziyech whose excellently measured through ball found Younes and the German finishes it across the line before any Lyon defender could get to him.
The visitors did make a comeback in the 66th minute when Lasse Schone’s poor defensive header was Punished by Valbuena, as he created space before thundering it high into the net.Lyon at last had something in the evening and with a away goal they were looking far more positive. the match was turning out to be a thriller with end -to- end football.
The visitors had the golden opportunity to turn the tie when Ghezzal went on a excellent run and finds Fekir in space but Onana was quick to turn him aside and prevented the visitors from getting a massive 2nd away goal.
The save from Onana was very crucial as it would have given Lyon a 2 away advantage. But Ajax replied with a 4th goal when Davy Klassen’s lofted ball found Ziyech, the Morroco international smashed it across goal as Traore tucks it home to make it 4-1.
Ajax never removed their foot off the pedal as they created chances and kept on looking for more till the final whistle. Ziyech was exceptional with his hattrick of assists and he almost scored in the dying minutes of the match but was denied by a good amount of luck and also to Lopes’ quick reflexes, as the goalkeeper somehow manages to get his foot out and tips the shot over the bar.
Peter Bosz men will look confident about this tie as they impose a good lead on their French opponent and should probably manage to see them off in their away fixture next week. Ajax has proven that a side full of youth is more than enough to achieve greatness and glory in European competition.
