Marcelo saves the day for Real Madrid

Real Madrid salvaged all the three points from the game against Valencia courtesy of a late goal from Marcelo at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with well placed header in the 27th minute from Dani Carvajal’s cross. Taking the lead, Real Madrid pressed high and the visitors struggled to find the possession on the ball and had to defend deep into their own half. Most of their wayward passes were intercepted by their opponent, but nevertheless held on to the 1-0 deficit at the half time.

Real Madrid were in control for large spells of the game and were on the verge of extending their lead in the 57th minute when Dani Parejo brought down Luka Modrić inside the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty but his attempt was denied by Diego Alves who dived to his left to keep Valencia in the game. The Brazilian shot-stopper has made a reputation of being an excellent penalty saver and this was his third penalty save against the Real Madrid winger.

The Los Blancos continued to push for their second goal, but Valencia’s ability to remain in the game yielded positive results. Casemiro’s foul on Fabián Orellana outside the box gave Los Che a free kick from a lucrative position. Dani Parejo swung in and curled the ball beyond Keylor Navas to pull Valencia level 1-1 at the 82nd minute.

Real Madrid, who have so often scored late goals this season to seize crucial victories, kicked into gear to rescuse yet another important win. With less than five minutes of normal time to play, substitute Álvaro Morata played the ball across the the box which was picked up by Marcelo. The Brazilian unleashed a right footed shot beyond the reach of Diego Alves to hand a dramatic 2-1 victory to the home side.

With this victory, Real Madrid put the pressure back on FC Barcelona who will be visiting RCDE Stadium later in the evening to play against their local rivals.

Real Madrid will return to action on Tuesday against Atlético at the Bernabéu in the first leg of Champions League semi finals.
