John Terry: The symbol of success, leadership and pride
John George Terry, the man who glorified the blue Chelsea jersey for long 22years is set to end his legacy this season. Terry is regarded as the most successful captain of both Chelsea and one of the most successful captain in the history of England.
Terry added 14-trophies including 1UCL,1 Europa league, 4 EPL champions, 5 FA cup and 3 league cup. He is always regarded as a fearless, committed and dynamic captain who can do anything for the victory of his team be it nullifying opponent forwards or scoring crucial goals from headers. In 1995 Terry started his Chelsea journey at the age of 14.
He started as a midfielder but due to lack of central backs, he was shifted to central back, the position in which he plays even today. He made his debut for Chelsea senior team on 28 October,1998 as a late substitute in a league cup match against Aston Villa. Terry first started for Chelsea later in that season against Oldham athletic in FA cup.
He spent a brief loan spell at Nottingham forest in 1999-2000 season under David Platt to gain first-team experiences. His talents was spotted by the then Huddersfield manager, Steve Bruce who bid 75000pound for him. But Terry opted to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place in the first team.
Terry scored his first goal for Chelsea against Gillingham in FA cup 6th round in the same season and also got his first major honour as Chelsea went on to win the FA cup. Terry started cementing his place in the first team as he made 21-starts in the 2000-2001 season and was voted the club’s player of the season. His progress steadily continued as he became a regular in the first team forming a duo with the then Club captain and France legend, Marcel Desailly.
On 5 December 2001 Terry captained Chelsea for the first time against Charlton Athletic in FA cup. Chelsea reached the final after defeating London rivals Tottenham in the 6th round, West ham in the 4th round and Fulham in the semi-final, where Terry scored the only goal. In the next season, Terry took over the captaincy of Chelsea from Marcel Desailly and started leading Chelsea to the glorious period of their history. In that season Terry formed an almost impenetrable defensive duo with William Gallas and finished second in EPL.
The appointment of Jose Mourinho in the next season marked the beginning of the golden period in the history of THE PENSIONERS. The Blues under the captaincy of John Terry won the league for the first time since 1955. Chelsea made a defensive record of conceding only 19goals in the whole season under the leadership of Chelsea’s CAPTAIN LEADER LEGEND. Chelsea also reached the UCL semi-final through a late header of Terry against Barcelona. Terry was awarded EPL player of the year becoming the first defender to win it after 1993.
Chelsea retained the league title in the following season with a whooping 91points making the record of most points obtained by a team in EPL. In the final match, Chelsea thrashed Manchester united by a 3-0 margin. Terry was a part of the FIFA World XI and was also awarded as the best defender of UCL. On 14 October 2006 Terry had to play as a goalkeeper in EPL match against Reading after both goalkeepers Carlo Cudicini and Petr Cech(that horrendous skull injury) had to be substituted. On 5 November 2006 Terry got sent off against Tottenham hotspur for the first time in his Chelsea career after receiving 2 yellow cards.
Chelsea lost that match at White Hart Lane for the first time since 1987. John missed several matches in that season due to a back injury. During his absence Chelsea conceded 6goals. Terry underwent back surgery and made his return against Charlton Athletic on 3 February 2007. In the UCL quarter-final match against Porto Terry was injured his ankle this time. He was doubtful for the League cup final against Arsenal but he made a speedy recovery to play in the final. The League cup final against Arsenal showed the love and commitment of Chelsea fans’ heart-throb when Terry threw himself to head the ball from a Frank Lampard corner and Arsenal midfielder, Abou Diaby, in an attempt to clear the ball hit Terry in the face. Terry was unconscious for about 10minutes. Terry returned after two weeks and lead his team to 3rd UCL semi-final in 4years. He also lead Chelsea to the first FA cup final in new Wembley on May 2007. Chelsea won the FA cup.
In 2007-2008 season Terry signed a new 5year contract getting a base salary of 135000 pound making him the highest paid player of that time. In EPL match against Arsenal Terry was seriously injured after Eboue stepped on his foot while Terry was clearing the ball. He was expected to be sidelined for about three to four months but he returned quickly and lead his team to League cup final against Tottenham which he lost by 2-1. In the last match of the season against Bolton wanderers Terry suffered a dislocated elbow after colliding with Petr Cech but that injury could not stop him from playing in 2007-08 UCL final against arch rival Manchester united. On that night in Moscow, Terry experienced his worst nightmare come true as Chelsea lost to Manchester united on penalties after Terry himself and Anelka missed the spot kick.
On 29 August 2008, Terry was awarded best defender by UEFA along with Frank Lampard and Petr Cech also being awarded for their respective position. On 13 September 2008, Terry got his first straight red card after fouling Jo. Terry won the 2nd FA cup of his career and 5th FA cup for Chelsea defeating Everton under Guus Hiddink. In 2009-10 season Chelsea played a completely different game under Carlo Ancelotti. They were transformed into a goal-scoring machine from the boring defensive team. Chelsea won the first double of their history i.e EPL and FA cup scoring a record 101goals in that season.
Terry was awarded a new 5year contract extension. The 2011-12 season was not a good season for Terry and Chelsea. On 31st December Terry made his 400 appearances for Chelsea in the home match against Aston Villa. Chelsea under the young Portuguese manager, Andres Villas-Boas, couldn’t repeat the success of former Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho. They faced a total 6defeats and went out of the league cup after being defeated by Liverpool.
On 4 March 2012 Villas-boas was sacked after defeat against Napoli in UCL quarter final. Former Chelsea legend Roberto Di Matteo was appointed as the interim coach. In the second leg of the semi-final against Barcelona Terry was given the marching order after his tackle on Alexis Sanchez although Chelsea managed to end the match by a 2-2 margin after trailing by 2goals through Ramires and Torres. On 19 May 2012, both Terry and Chelsea experienced the greatest night as Terry lifted the UEFA Champions league after defeating Bayern Munich at Allianz arena on penalties. Chelsea also won the FA cup for the 4th time after defeating Liverpool by 2-1.
In 2012-13 season Terry experienced ups and downs as Chelsea became the first defending champion to be eliminated from the group stages. Roberto Di Matteo was sacked after only 6months of being appointed as Chelsea manager. Terry and co also lost the FIFA Club World cup in the hands of minnows, Corinthians. It was speculated that Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole could leave the club due to a rift between players and manager Rafa Benitez. Terry got 4 match ban after he was accused of throwing racist comments towards Anton Ferdinand of QPR. After returning Terry scored his 50th career goal against Liverpool before getting injured in the 39th minute of the match. Terry got sidelined for 16matches including the Club World Cup defeat. On 17 April 2013 Terry scored twice against Fulham in the London derby. He signed a one-year contract extension on 13 May 2014 on the request of Jose Mourinho.
On 18th October 2014, Terry captained Chelsea for 500th time against Crystal PalaceUEFA Champions league. In that season Terry scored the fastest goal of Chelsea in the UCL against Schalke. Terry also surpassed David Unsworth and became the highest goal-scoring defender of EPL after scoring for the 39th time against Liverpool. Terry was nominated for the EPL team of the season along with his five team-mates. On 23rd August 2015, Terry received a red card after 5years against West Bromwich Albion for fouling Solomon Rondon. In February 2016 Terry announced that there were no talks about a contract extension and he would leave Chelsea. Antonio Conte in his first press conference announced that Terry is staying and will remain the club captain.
So, at last, the fairy tale is going to end with Mr Chelsea leaving his kingdom. The legacy he created at Stamford Bridge can’t be matched by any other player. Cahill is speculated to fill the boots of our legendary CAPTAIN LEADER LEGEND. We hope he has learnt all the necessary things to fill the boots of a man who guarded the Blues as a father guards his child.
