Thomas Tuchel’s men reign supreme at Borussia Park giving boost to their UCL hopes
Borussia Monchengladbach 2-3 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund’s hopes for Qualification for the Champions League were boosted as they left it late to win against Monchengladbach
Dortmund went through a pretty rough phase lately, starting from the terrorist attacks in front of their team bus and ending with Defeat to AS Monaco which resulted in their exit from the Champions League. But Tuchel was confident that his men can certainly turn it around against Monchengladbach. By the end of the 90 minutes, Tuchel was the happier manager as his team left it late to win a thriller at the Borussia Park. This victory will give loads of confidence as they will be playing arch rivals Bayern in Wednesday’s DFB Pokal (cup) semifinal match.
To everyone’s surprise, Tuchel left the Bundesliga top scorer Aubameyang on the bench as he started with Reus, Pulisic and Dembele upfront. Reus had an early oppurtunity to give the visitors the lead but he missed the chance as he headed it over in the 2nd minute. But he made no mistake when he was given the oppurtunity to redeem himself from 12 yards, but fortune was definitely with Dortmund as the ref pointed to the spot despite the contact between Dahoud and Pulisic happened just outside the box. Reus was calm and composed and handed Dortmund the early lead in the 10th minute.
Ousmane Dembele’s shot from close range could have doubled the lead but was prevented by Yann Sommer’s excellent reflexes. Dortmund suffered a blow when Nuri Sahin was forced off due to thigh injury and was replaced by Mikel Merino. Dortmund dominated the 1st half and credit goes to Pulisic who was exceptional. But all their dominance was held back just 2 minutes before half time when Merino sloppily gave away the ball in his own half and Andre Hahn was alert as he passed it to Lars Stindl who lashed it into the bottom-right corner.
Gladbach carried momentum into the 2nd half as Roman Burki had to be alert to get off his line and deny Andre Hahn after he had overpowered the Dortmund defenders. The resulting corner turned the tides to Gladbach’s favour as Wendt took advantage of Dortmund’s failure to deal with the first delivery so he fired another cross which was diverted beyond Burki by Schmelzer giving away the lead to Gladbach.
Aubameyang was brought in for Reus for repairing the damage and he did exactly what he was asked for, when he latched on Dembele’s pass and took it beyond Sommer brilliantly from a tight angle. Sommer was tested on several occassions by Pulisic and Sven Bender as Dortmund were looking for a turn around. But Dortmund should be grateful to Burki, as Gladbach substitute Patrick Herrmann just had the keeper to beat and he tried to lift it over Burki, but the Swiss was equal to the task as he pulled off a fantastic save.
Guerreiro was unlucky as he went agonisingly close to give Dortmund the lead. It was an excellent turn in the box and Guerreiro fired a low shot at goal. Sommer was beaten as the ball was heading toward the bottom-left corner but bounced back after hitting the inside of the post and was cleared by Gladbach defenders.
However Guerreiro had the last laugh when he glanced the ball whipped by Castro beyond Sommer and handed Dortmund a crucial away win and something to celebrate this weekend.
Dortmund were dominating play in terms of possession and chances created and will be very confident after this victory as they will face Bayern in the Cup Semi final in Wednesday. Dortmund went up to third position ahead of Hoffenheim due to this victory away from home.
