Manchester United 2-1 RSC Anderlecht (3-2 agg)
Marcus Rashford struck home in the 107th minute to secure a 2-1 win for Manchester United and send them into the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Anderlecht at the latter’s home ground in the first leg and Mourinho’s men were looking to make strong amendments for that draw.
There was an early scare for United when Dendoncker’s dipping strike almost caught out Sergio Romero, only to sail over the crossbar.
United took the lead in the 10th minute when Mkhitaryan collected Rashford’s pass on the edge of the box before rifling his strike past Ruben into the bottom corner.
In the 22nd minute Rojo collided with Bailly, only to stay down for a few minutes before being carried away on the stretcher. He was replaced by Blind.
Romero was forced into an excellent save in the 27th minute when Appiach surged through the United backline before squaring the ball for Dendoncker to strike, but Romero got a fingertip on the ball to prevent his curling strike from finding the net.
Hanni found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to score a crucial away goal for Anderlecht. He hammered the ball past Romero from close range. Tielemans caused havoc in the box as his deflected strike hit the bar, while Teodorczyk did just enough to steer the ball into Hanni’s path to strike with power into the net.
United made a strong start to the second half when Rashford and Shaw combined down the left to give Lingard the opportunity from inside the six-yard box, but he couldn’t get enough contact on the ball.
United were creating heavy pressure on the visitors and it took a close-range save from Ruben to deny Ibrahimovic, before the former Sweden captain had a penalty claim turned down after going down under pressure from Uros Spajic.
Pogba missed a golden chance when Mkhitaryan’s corner fell into his path but his volley was nowhere near the goal.
Ibrahimovic also lahed a shot wide after great work from Carrick.Just when it seemed it couldn’t get any worse for Manchester United, the worst happened. Martial replaced Ibrahimovic for extra time but the striker was seen limping down the tunnel after landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge with Kara. We fear that his season is over.
