Sporting Gijon 2-3 Real Madrid: Match Report
Isco dazzles as Real Madrid clinch a dramatic victory over Sporting Gijón.
Isco resurrects Real Madrid’s title aspirations with a brace as the Los Merengues extend their lead over FC Barcelona to six points. In a match that saw Zinedine Zidane making nine changes from the mid-week victory against Bayern München, Isco’s performance made the difference between the two sides.
With ‘BBC’ being absent, Álvaro Morata, Lucas Vázquez and Marco Asensio started the game for Real. The home side drew the first blood in the 14th minute as Duje Čop dispatched a left-footed shot beyond Kiko Casilla following a superb scooped pass from Mikel Vesga. Nonetheless, the visitors responded soon. Isco skipped away from the Sporting defenders inside the box and whipped a shot into the top corner to make the score level in the 17th minute.
The scoreline was evenly poised at the half-time break but Vesga’s looping header in the 50th minute put Sporting in the front once again. Real Madrid found their way back in the 59th minute after Morata scored the second equaliser from a header with Danilo providing the assist.
As the clock ticked away, a draw looked on the cards. But with eight seconds of normal time left, Isco slotted home for the visitors by drilling a low shot into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
The victory takes Real Madrid to 75 points, 6 ahead of FC Barcelona who will be hosting Real Sociedad later this evening.
