Match Preview: Milan derby
An intense battle is always on the cards when the latest edition of the Derby della Madonnina comes around, and this Saturday will be no exception as Inter lock horns with AC Milan.
Both sides are still in the running for an automatic Europa League spot, but will have to close the gap between themselves and Atalanta, who presently sits in fifth. La Dea have been surprisingly good this term, and whilst no one would have expected them to be actually ahead of Inter and Milan at this juncture, they are. The Rossoneri have had their share of ups and downs this season under yet another new coach.
At the midway point, Vincenzo Montella’s side were actually in contention for the Champions League and had some fans hoping that finally the club’s long absence from European competition had come to an end. They also won their first piece of silverware since 2011 by beating Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana in December. However, since the turn of the year, things have again gone awry and as such, they have slipped back down the table.
Inter, meanwhile, will be still reeling after their utter surprising defeat to Crotone. That arguably had to be the biggest upset of the season. Although the debutants had beaten Chievo prior to that game, the Flying Donkeys are nowhere near the level of Inter. Chievo’s objective each season is to secure a mid-table spot, whilst Inter aspire to feature in at least the Europa League.
Those European ambitions, once seemingly solid since Stefano Pioli took over, now have taken a major hit. Inter come into this derby having lost two in a row and they will be loath to make it a third – especially not against bitter rivals Milan.
