Battle lines drawn for Benjamin Mendy
Premier League giants are plotting a summer swoop for AS Monaco Left-Back Benjamin Mendy.
Mendy, the 22-year-old France International, has put up some quality displays since joining Monaco from Marseille last summer for a reported £13m deal. He has 10 assists to his name in 33 appearances for Monaco this season across all competitions, which is highest by any defender in Europe’s top 5 leagues. Mendy’s pace, attacking mindset, passing accuracy and solid defensive displays have already caught the attention of English big guns.
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all are after Mendy. Liverpool are also interested in Mendy as per Mirror.
Chelsea are ready to re-establish themselves in the Champions League next season and Antonio Conte wants to bolster his squad with some quality signings. They are ready to splash the cash for Mendy with Marcos Alonso being their only choice at the Left-Back position. Jurgen Klopp deployed James Milner at the Left-Back position many times this season and he sees Mendy as the perfect piece to solve his problems at the back.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is ready to let Luke Shaw go to make way for Mendy after becoming increasingly frustrated with the England International’s injury problems and lack of form.
Manchester City’s two Left-Backs this season- Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy, both are on the wrong side of the 30’s and it’s highly unlikely that both of them will be at the Etihad next season with Mendy being identified as the replacement by Pep Guardiola.
Mendy is reportedly valued at £26m by AS Monaco. He has a contract at Stade Louis II until 2021. Mendy is a product of France’s highly-rated Le Havre Academy. He has represented France at every junior level and made his debut for the France National Team last month against Luxembourg.
