Shiliguri turns green and maroon after kolkata derby

Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal, the two arch rivals of Indian football locked horns with each other in the second derby of I-league at Kanchenjunga stadium, Shiliguri. Mohun Bagan won the match by a 2-1 margin and defeated East Bengal for the 1st time in 16years at Shiliguri.

Mohun Bagan started the derby with attacking mode and created 3 goal-scoring chances in the first 20minutes with the help of individual brilliance of Mohun Bagan heart-throb Sony Norde and hard-work of Captain Katsumi Yusa and Balwant Singh. Then East Bengal started taking control of the match with the help of hard-working attacking midfielder Wedson Anselme and speedy wingers Romeo Fernandez and Abhinash Ruidas. The deadlock was ultimately broken by Sony Norde in the 35minutes of the match from a curling free-kick which found the top right corner of the net leaving East Bengal goalkeeper, Rehneesh helpless. He was fouled by East Bengal central back, Gurwinder Singh. Mohun Bagan then started attacking with double encourage from the two wings through Sony Norde and young u-22 Azharuddin Mallick. Mohun Bagan got the result of this attack in the 38minutes when they got their second goal. Azharuddin got the ball from Kotal just above the centre circle. He then lobbed the ball from about 30yards after seeing the position of Rehneesh scoring a brilliant goal for the first time in Kolkata derby in his career. Then two glorious chances were missed by Sony Norde and Daryl Duffy.

In the 38minutes East Bengal brought Australian forward Chris Payne in place of Abhinash Ruidas. East Bengal attacking trio Weson-Plaza-Payne started creating pressure on the Bagan defence but Bagan defence under the leadership of Anas Ethodika fought valiantly.In 52minutes Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar made a great save from Bukeneya’s header. Mohun Bagan then brought on Prabir Das in place of Raju Gaikwad as Raju was on a yellow card and couldn’t catch up with the pace of Romeo. Mohun Bagan started slowing down the pace of the match by playing short passes. In the 66minutes a brawl occurred between the players of two teams when Plaza hit Anas in the face. Referee A.Rowan gave Plaza the marching order which diminished all hopes of East Bengal of a come-back. In 74minutes tension rose between two Punjab lad of both teams Balwant and Gurwinder and match got halted as East Bengal supporters threw stones in the field. In 79minutes Jeje was brought on in place of Azharuddin Mallick. East Bengal defensive midfielder Rowlin Borges had a tough match today against Katsumi Yusa and fouled him constantly. In 87minutes Jackichand Singh substituted Romeo Fernandez.In 90+1min Souvik Chakraborty came in for Balwant Singh. In the 2nd minute of the 3mins added time, Eastbengal got a consolation goal after Rowlin Borges scored from a Wedson corner as he was left unmarked by Bagan defence. Sony Norde was chosen MAN OF THE MATCH. This win gave Mohun Bagan a valuable three points and also gave them a great confidence to face Aizawl FC in the next match.
