Antoine Griezmann spoils the party for Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s title quest is given a blow by Antoine Griezmann’s late equaliser.
The two Madrid sides faced each other on Saturday afternoon with both teams looking for the 3 crucial points. The game was played at a good pace with both sides creating chances in the first half.
Cristiano Ronaldo came closest to scoring in the 31st minute but was denied by Stefan Savić who made an excellent goal-line headed clearance.
Jan Oblak made a couple of saves including one from Karim Benzema to prevent Los Blancos from scoring. Atlético weren’t short of chances either. Saúl’s header from Koke’s free kick went just wide of the post. Griezmann latched on to a miss pass from Sergio Ramos and unleashed a powerful shot which was saved by Keylor Navas.
The second half promised more action and expectantly lived up to it. Pepe gave Real Madrid the lead at the 52nd minute with a perfectly placed header from Toni Kroos’s set-piece.
Atlético had a chance to make the scoreline level when Fernando Torres went through one on one with Navas, but the Costa Rican made a brilliant save to deny the former Chelsea man.
Pepe picked up a nasty injury when he collided with Kroos and had to be subbed off. Real Madrid continued to dominate the game enjoying more ball possession. As the clock ticked away, victory looked evident. However, substitute Ángel Correa’s through ball found Griezmann on the left and the Frenchman made no mistake in putting the ball at the back of the net in the 85th minute to spoil the party for the Los Blancos.
This draw opens up the La Liga title race even more. Barcelona, who are now 3 points behind Real, will be visiting Málaga and will be aiming to snatch all the three points from the fixture.
