Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Match Preview
Atlético Madrid faces Real Madrid in the match week 31 of La Liga at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid are in cruise control at the top of the table and they are looking well determined to win the La Liga title.
Atlético Madrid on the other hand don’t have any chance of winning the title until and unless some sort of miracle happens. So they have set their sights on the much coveted UEFA Champions League. But this doesn’t gives any sort of relief to Zidane as Diego Simeone’s men are seeking a 4th straight La Liga win at the Santiago Bernabeu. No team, not even FC Barcelona, have ever won 3 in a row.
Atlético Madrid would like to maintain their perfect start after the INTERNATIONAL BREAK as they face a difficult task of taming the Madrid giants. Both the Madrid giants have picked up 6 points out of a possible 6 to consolidate their positions in the table. While a loss at the Santiago Bernabeu wouldn’t affect the ranking of Atletico but they would love to carry some good memories while going into the match against Leicester City.
This isn’t a match for 3 points. It is a match of pride. It’s lot more than 3 points. Real Madrid went 14 years without losing to Atlético Madrid. Before Simeone’s arrival at the Calderon in the final days of 2011, Atletico fans and players alike accepted their fate as “El Pupas” – the cursed ones.
Even when Atletico travelled to the Bernabeu a month before Simeone’s arrival, Real Madrid unfurled a banner towards the end of another routine 4-1 win.But everything changed after the arrival of Simeone. Simeone finally broke the curse. After 14 years without a derby win, Atletico beat Real to win the Copa del Rey at the Bernabeu in 2013.Since then there have been 17 derbies in the past four years. Six wins apiece, with five draws.
Zidane is unlikely to rest key players even though they have a tough test in the form of Bayern Munich in the coming days and the same goes with Atletico Madrid too. Ronaldo was rested along with Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, for the match against Leganes on Wednesday, preparing them for a huge effort in the derby. Diego Simeone will miss the services of long term absentee Augusto Fernandez, Tiago, Sime Vrsaljko.
