Monaco were thrashed 4-1 by PSG in the Coupe de la Ligue final.

One of the most mouth-watering clashes of French football, PSG vs Monaco, ended on a one-sided note with PSG emerged as the deserved victorious in the Coupe de la Ligue final.

There were lots of hustle-bustle surrounding this match with two sides full of attacking flairs, both having shown blistering forms recently, scheduled to face each other with the French League Cup up for grabs.

Monaco came into this match bearing the reputation of being one of the most stable and fierce attacking sides in Europe’s top 5 leagues, scoring a staggering 129 goals in the process. They had already met PSG twice this season before this match. Monaco won the first one by 3-1 at the Stade Louis II while the last one at the Parc de Princes produced a 1-1 scoreline. Considering their form, Monaco were favourites to lift the trophy this term but PSG had other plans in their mind.

PSG looked like the dominant side by a long margin from the moment of the kick-off and just after 4 minutes into the first half they got the big breakthrough. Verratti delivered an exquisite through ball to Angel Di Maria who selflessly passed the ball to Draxler to tap it in. PSG seemed to be lucky this time as Draxler was slightly offside but the referee didn’t raise his flag and PSG were 1-0 up already.

Monaco gradually adjusted themselves to the pace of the game and finally got the much-needed equaliser in the 27th minute. Bernardo Silva, Djibril Sidibe & Thomas Lemar showed some quality interplay among each other and Lemar tucked the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net with a left-footed strike from 25 yards. Trapp couldn’t do anything but to collect the ball from the back of the net.

The rest of the match was all about PSG’s utter domination. Di Maria and Draxler were again the difference as PSG took a 2-1 lead in the 44th minute. Draxler found Di Maria with a low cross and the Argentinian placed it beautifully at the bottom corner.

Pressure started to mount on the Monaco players. PSG made the most of it as they saw themselves going 3-1 up in the 54th minute. Verratti found Cavani with a curling cross. The Uruguayan striker’s powerful volley got past Subasic. Party had already begun in the French capital.

Cavani then missed an open chance but redeemed himself sooner, scoring from Di Maria’s cross in the 90th minute to put the game beyond any doubt for PSG and delivered the mortal blow to Monaco’s final hopes.

The Ligue 1 leaders Monaco were left stunned by PSG with their 14-year long duck in the French Cup continues. Les Parisiens have now won the French League Cup for a record seven times with four of them came in the last four years consecutively.
