Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez is a summer target for Manchester United.

Gimenez has a £56m buyout clause in his contract and Atletico boss Diego Simeone is ready to let him go if the right offer comes.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan International had been a constant figure in Atletico back four since joining the club in 2013. His superb displays at the heart of the defence attracted huge applause from the pundits. Simeone himself hailed Gimenez as the long term successor of Diego Godin.

But the situation has abruptly changed since his injury. He couldn’t replicate his from this season after recovering from that injury and now Diego Godin, Stefan Savic and Lucas Hernandez, all are above him in the pecking order. He has been restricted to 16 starts this season with only 7 of them came in La Liga. He isn’t happy with the lack of gametime and wants a move away from Vicente Calderon.

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the 22-year-old and wants to bring him at the Old Trafford to partner Eric Bailly. United even tried to sign him last summer but no such move was materialised.

Gimenez is reported to be well aware of United’s interest and he is keen on joining the Red Devils. United are also keeping a close eye on Benfica’s Swedish defender Victor Lindelof. But, with only 14 months left in Gimenez’s contract, the Red Devils are increasingly confident of snapping up a bargain from Vicente Calderon.

Liverpool are also interested in a move for Gimenez, claims AS. Jurgen Klopp wants some reinforcements in his defence and identified Gimenez as the perfect partner of Joel Matip. But Gimenez himself fancies a move to the Old Trafford.

Atletico Madrid are currently going through a transfer ban. Gimenez’s future largely depends on whether the transfer ban would be uplifted in the summer or not. They will let Gimenez go as soon as they sign up any potential replacement.

Gimenez has played 30 matches for Uruguay scoring 3 goals since his debut in 2013. He played for Uruguay in the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil and hoping to secure a place in the national squad for FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, should Uruguay qualify.
