Rodrigo Caio snubs PSG for Sao Paulo stay
Rodrigo Caio has signed a new 4 year deal with Sao Paulo to brush off PSG links.
Caio, 23, who primarily operate as a Centre Back or Defensive Midfielder, was heavily linked with the French giants Paris Saint-Germain for the last couple of days.
Caio won the Olympic gold medal with Brazil in 2016 and recently called up by Tite in the Brazil senior national squad for World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay.
Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Serie A club Napoli were also interested in the 23-year-old Brazilian. He was previously very close to joining Valencia in 2015 but a reported €12.5 deal collapsed at the very last moment due to a failed medical.
According to Sources Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho was also reportedly interested in signing Caio last January but the deal never materialised. In spite of such links, Caio thinks Sao Paulo are the best club for him right now to continue his development.
“It’s a great joy to renew my bond with the club,” Caio stated. “My whole family is from Sao Paulo, and I’m happy to be appreciated by Sao Paulo.”
“I hope to stay here longer and win titles to mark my name in the history of the club, because this is my main goal. I also owe a lot to the club for the support they’ve given me since I was 12 years old.”
Caio’s contract extension came as a huge blow for PSG who are trying to rebuild their abysmal defense that leaked 6 goals against Barcelona at Camp Nou in Champions League Round of 16. With veteran Thiago Silva isn’t becoming any younger, PSG-identified Caio as his perfect successor.
Rodrigo Caio’s new deal will keep him at the Morumbi based club until 2021.
