Emre Can: The Contract Saga Continues
Emre Can is entering the final year of his contract with Liverpool FC in the upcoming season. Meanwhile, the talks of him moving away from Anfield is prevalent in Merseyside media nowadays.
Although the Liverpool faithful will hope the versatile German will not leave them especially in such a transitional period of the club’s history, but the probability of him finding a new destination is gaining prominence day by day . The footballing career of Can as a player is also standing on an important juncture.
Previously reports had suggested that the 23-year-old was seeking an increase in his wages upto £100,000 a week.Though Can publicly denied the financial aspect as he said earlier on March “It is never about the money,it is about future”.
Although the fact remains that Can is yet to agree a new deal with the Merseyside club, the manager who is a compatriot of Can is hopeful about the situation. Klopp said, “We are in talks, what I can say? They are good. Emre likes to be here, we really like him as a person and as a player”. He added, “There are absolutely no problems in this moment, completely good talks, like with a lot of players”.
The performance graph of the player has obviously seen a marked upward turn off late especially after he was promoted to the regular first team action being benefitted by the absence of the skipper-Jordan Henderson due to injury. He is really filling the big shoes of ‘Hendo’ with quite some merit and has evolved as the pivot of the team recently.
Meanwhile, Can has been summoned by his national side recently and he featured against England on a friendly game, where his country edged past the ‘Three lions’ in a cagy affair at BVB Stadion by a scoreline of 1-0 via a Lukas Podolski strike.
As the international break ends, the razzmatazz of club football will resume. The first match of Liverpool after the break is against their arch rivals Everton, an all important Merseyside derby. Can is expected to be a prominent part in the scheme of things of Klopp in that match but the perseverance of the German in the illustrious red shirt is getting engulfed by clouds uncertainty.
The player’s arrival at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen was surrounded by much optimism as he was considered to be a prominent part of Liverpool’s future project. After some initial hiccups the player slowly got accustomed to the life in England and has also started to impose prominent marks on the field recently, much to the delight of the Merseysiders. But in the harsh reality of the professional world, economics is an important part which currently is the issue regarding Can’s persistence with the 5 time European Champions.
The upcoming weeks are being considered to be highly important on this regard. The supporters will like to see the talented player remain at Anfield, but if he leaves then they will have none to blame but their club’s current financial status, an issue which forced them year after year to sell their best players failing to live upto their demands. What the future has in store nobody knows, but if Emre Can leaves the club then the Liverpool management would have to give a serious thought to the entire curriculum of this heritageous footballing landmark of Europe.
