Barcelona are reportedly keen on striking a deal with Leicester City regarding Riyad Mahrez. The 26-year-old Algerian International was a prominent figure in Leicester’s PL triumph last season. His superb display earned him ‘PFA Player of The Year’ award.
Barca were reportedly interested in signing him last summer but the Foxes were reluctant to sell their prize asset as N’Golo Kante left for Chelsea and finally Mahrez signed a new 4-year deal last August.
Even Catalan legend Xavi put his support regarding any such deal last summer. “Mahrez is good enough to play for Barcelona, but I am pleased he decided to stay with Leicester,” the 37-year-old said when asked by ‘Shortlist’ magazine which player the Catalan club should sign from the English top flight. “He clearly must have had options, but if Leicester had lost their best player after such a big achievement it would have been a shame.” “It will be interesting to see how he and Leicester perform in Europe this season.”
According to Spanish publication ‘Sport’ Barcelona are ready to test Leicester’s power again this season. Mahrez himself is said to be interested in moving to Camp Nou from King Power Stadium. Things aren’t going well for the Foxes this season. Although they have reached Champions League Quarter-final, they are just 6 points clear of the relegation zone in EPL. Leicester officials are well aware that such results would do nothing but propel a move for Mahrez away from King Power but they are adamant that any potential suitors must fork out £34m for his services. Mahrez has scored 9 goals for Leicester this season in all competitions.
