Karim Benzema Set to Stay in Madrid Colours
Real Madrid is reportedly keen on extending the contract of Karim Benzema beyond its cessation date in June 2019.
The Frenchman was subjected to a controversy and was left out of France’s 2016 Euro Cup squad. Since then, Benzema has often been criticised for his lack of converting the chances, with the striker failing to score in many games.
He has often failed to find the net this season, scoring only 16 goals from 36 appearances. With the availability of Álvaro Morata in the squad, Benzema’s performances have lately prompted sections of Bernabéu crowd to jeer and whistle at him.
However, his recent performances have drawn praise from the fans as well as Zinedine Zidane, who has been a long-standing admirer of the Los Blancos no. 9. Benzema scored a brace against Eibar two weeks ago and was an instrumental figure in Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Athletic Club in which he scored the opening goal of the match.
The Frenchman has always been noted for his link-up play which has been essential for Real Madrid’s attacking prowess. Now in his eighth season with the Los Blancos, he has amassed a tally of 177 goals thereby becoming the eighth highest scorer in the history of the club.
The former Lyon man has been linked with moves away from Real on quite a few number of occasions in the past and was reportedly on his way out of the Spanish capital at the end of the season. Nevertheless, he is believed to be satisfied in his current club, with his team-mates extending their support to him. And with the recent turn of events, it is likely that the 29-year-old will perhaps stay with Real Madrid for few more seasons.
