The girl who made Brazil proud takes Swedish nationality.

Marta Vieira da Silva, popularly known as Marta has announced that she has taken Swedish nationality on Tuesday.

Widely regarded as the greatest woman footballer ever, the Brazillian ace has represented the land of samba 4 times in FIFA World Cup and thrice in the Olympics.



“I feel Swedish too and now I am super happy after getting the citizenship”, said the 5 time FIFA Women’s Player of the Year winner (2006-2010) showing her documents of joint nationality to the press at Stockholm.

Although she had made it clear that she will keep representing Brazil on the international stage. Applying for the citizenship of the Scandinavian nation has not come overnight for Marta.



She first came to Sweden in 2004 for playing for Swedish Damallsvansken side Umeå IK. After few years with the club, she left the country but returned again to play for Tyreso FF. Currently, she is playing for Swedish side FC Rosengard.

Thus after almost spending one-third of her life in the land of Bjorn Borg ‘Pele with skirts’ has opted for the Swedish nationality as she considers Sweden to be her ‘Second home’ and also said that she would like to settle in Sweden after she bids adios to the game.
