Sporting Goa and Dempo confirms withdrawal from i-league
The two Goan clubs, Sporting club de goa and Dempo sports club confirmed their withdrawal from the upcoming season of I-league. another top tier club Salgocar fc has already pulled out of the league earlier. It is learnt that both clubs have made the decision in support of Salgocar FC.
A joint decision by Salagaocar FC, Dempo SC and SCG to withdraw from the league was issued on 24th of June 2016, as all three clubs were opposed to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) decision to restructure the domestic league pyramid. As per the new road map of Indian football, the Indian Super League will be the top tier with the I-League becoming the second tier. The top flight will not have relegation, while the second tier will not have promotion.
In the recently concluded I-League SCG and Salgocar finished 4th and 7th respectively. meanwhile Dempo SC gained promotion to the league by becoming the champions of 2nd division league.
This years I-League is going to be a 7 team affair unless AIFF decides to add new teams in the league. Since all the top tier clubs from Goa decided to pull of the league, the only hope is on Fc Bardez as they are on the verge of gaining promotion to I-League via corporate entry.
