FC Goa beat FC Pune City by 1-0
FC Goa beat FC Pune by 1-0 as Rafael Coelho was able to find the target for a set-piece situation.
FC Goa managed to climb out of bottom in the Indian Super League as they beat FC Pune City 1-0 thanks to a 32nd minute free-kick from Rafael Coelho. Having lost the return fixture late in the game, Zico’s side were able to get their revenge against the Hrithik Roshan co-owned side at the Balewadi Stadium on Thursday.
Pune were dominating in terms of time on the ball, with marquee man Mohammed Sissoko seeing plenty of action, but they were producing little in terms of end product. For Goa, on the other hand, Jofre Mateu had time and space to take a pop on goal having been played in by Robin, but his shot needed better direction as it is blazed high and wide.
Goa were almost pegged back near the death, and it were two former Goa men who nearly made it happen. Jonatan Lucca danced his way past several Goa shirts to cut in from the left and let fly. His near post effort though, was met well by Kattimani.
Jofre was presented a glorious opportunity to score by Coelho, but he fluffed his bases and shot high when through on goal and with just the keeper to beat.
Much of Goa’s problems have been their profligate finishing rather than their ability to create chances. Last year’s finalists have fired in 67 shots only Atletico de Kolkata and Delhi have more and they have also managed to test the goalkeeper with more than 50 percent of their shots on target. It is their goal conversion rate of 5.97 percent which is the worst in the league and should Zico hope to win five of the remaining seven matches to qualify for the semi-finals, his strikers will have to start firing.
