Paul Pogba in defence as Jose Mourinho reveals bizarre plans

Mourinho now planning to play Paul Pogba at defence as he is not firing for Manchester United.

The Manchester United boss has admitted that the £89million flop would make a “phenomenal” defender.

The Frenchman, 23, has come in for huge criticism in the past few weeks, as he and United have struggled this season.

Pogba was outplayed by international team-mate N’Golo Kante as Chelsea romped to a 4-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The midfielder has three goals in 11 appearances for United so far this season but has struggled to consistently dominate as was expected.

Mourinho’s claimed that Pogba needs time to adapt to the Premier League – the Portuguese isn’t really going to put Pogba further back.

But he did say: “With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender, too.

Mourinho had earlier said that Pogba’s struggles so far this season are not because of his position or the Manchester United system.

He said: “He can play in so many positions. The problem is not the position. The problem is not the tactical system.

“The problem is, in my opinion, somebody that comes from a different style of football and needs this time to be at his best level in football that is really difficult to play, especially for midfield players.”

Mourinho added: “I think it is really difficult to play or adapt from different realities, but he is a phenomenal player. He has unbelievable potential.

“He has years and years to develop his game, so that expectation and investment from the club is based on that — a super player for the next seven or eight years.”
