Riyad Mahrez says Gunners failed to poach him from Leicester
To bring an end to all of the transfer speculation, Mahrez put pen to paper on a new four-year contract under Claudio Ranieri in the summer.
And the 25-year-old has confessed Arsenal did approach him but failed to strike a deal with Leicester.
Mahrez told Canal Football Cub: “There was contact with Arsenal.
“But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive. I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in.
“Personally, I think it is a good thing I stayed put.
“It’s now up to me to prove myself again.”
The Gunners also missed out on Mahrez’s forward partner Jamie Vardy after the duo guided Leicester to the Premier League title last season. The England international eventually snubbed Arsenal’s approach, despite Wenger’s best efforts, as he stayed loyal to the Foxes as he was preparing for the Euros.
