Chelsea to sign Michael Keane for £25m

Antonio Conte has earmarked Burnley centre-back Michael Keane as a transfer target to help solve Chelsea’s defensive crisis.

His key £30m midfield holding man N’Golo Kanté appears to have lost the ability to run, while £34m central defender David Luiz’s most telling impact has been passing on some of his old circus tricks to Gary Cahill.

Chelsea are understood to have made a preliminary enquiry about Keane.

He was wanted by Premier League champions Leicester in the summer.

Burnley rejected several bids from Leicester , with the Foxes failing with a final offer of £15million for the 23-year-old.

Keane began his career at Manchester United and was allowed to leave last year for £2m.

Yet there is a belief that Burnley would not be able to turn down a £25m bid for the England Under-21 player, who helped them get promoted to the Premier League last season.

Chelsea signed David Luiz back from Paris Saint-Germain for £30m on transfer deadline day but are still leaking goals, having lost 3-0 to Arsenal at the weekend.

They were without the injured John Terry for that trip to the Emirates Stadium and the 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

But Chelsea are confident they can succeed where Leicester failed, with Keane set to be offered an improved contract by Burnley in a bid to keep him at Turf Moor.
